Family news from Etiopia!!!

Good news for Henrica and our partners in Finland! I and my family are very happy. This thursday, 27.6.2013 God gave us our second child in Yirgalem Hospital. This  time I and my child are very fine. This joy is not only for me and my family, but for all our partners in Finland too. I wish the grace of God for all our partners and I wait any advice and encouragement. It is very important to the time of childbed.                        – Bezunesh

Ohjaan mielelläni onnittelut Bezuneshin FB-sivuille. Vaikuttaa siltä, että hän ottaa kiitollisena kaikki rohkaisun sanat vastaan. On muuten tosi mukava juttu, että niin moni tukirinkiläinen on Bezuneshin FB-kaveri. Tällöin hän pystyy antamaan meille kasvot ja nimet epämääräisen ryhmän sijaan. Bezuneshilta saapui viesti:

Dearst, I am still not giving birth, but my health is very fine as checked yesterday in Yirgalem hospital. I don't know when I give birth, God knows. Our working project will continue by my husband within different ethnic grops specially in Oromia area in Bale Kokosa as our plan. This project is working, it is a great thing to us to teach and save many women from the traditional harmful FGM. If everything goes fine we will send the report in one month. God bless you and our partners in Finland!

Bezuneshin ja tukiringin tilanteista

Mitä Bezuneshille kuuluu? Kerron kohta. Ensin kuitenkin käytännön juttuja. En ole onnistunut saamaan kokoon koko tavoitesummaa, 1400e, joka olisi ollut Bezuneshin ja Tesfayen molempien palkka. En ole oikein uskaltanut laajentaa rinkiä, koska pitäisi olla se yhdistys jotta saisi sen rahankeräysluvan. Nyt aion kuitenkin lopulta tehdä asialle jotain. Kun byrokratian kiemurat on selätetty, on hyvä hetki lähteä laajentamaan rinkiä. Mutta siitä lisää sitten (teidän jokaisen panostus on siinä tärkeä!). 

Maksoin Bezuneshille ja Tesfayelle sen verran kun pystyin, eli 700e. He olivat hyvin kiitollisia. Bezunesh kertoi, että työskentelee edelleen Tesfayen kanssa ja mahdollisesti ensi viikosta alkaen aikoo pitää lomaa. Hänelle on kuitenkin tärkeä asia, että projekti jatkuu ja Bezunesh onkin todella iloinen siitä, että palkkasimme Tesfayen mukaan, jolloin projekti voikin pyöriä koko ajan. He jo suunnittelevat uutta reissua Oromian alueelle. Edelleen Bezunesh pyytää rukoustukea, hän tuntuu olevan melko huolissaan synnytyksestä. Ei mikään ihme, jos muistelee ensimmäistä synnytystään... Pidetään siis hänet mielessä ja jos rukoilu ei tunnu luontevalta, voi aina lähettää positiivisia ajatuksia!

Hieno raportti Sidamasta!

Viimeisillään raskaana oleva Bezunesh sekä miehensä Tesfaye lähettivät meille jälleen upean raportin työstään Sidamassa. Olen hieman tiivistänyt sekä boldannut projektin kannalta oleellisimmat kohdat. Koska Etiopiassa perustellaan silpomista kristinuskolla ja raamatulla, on Bezuneshin ja Tesfayen opetuksetkin hyvin raamattukeskeisiä.

Topic- The significance of circumcision in Judaism and what the Bible says about female genital mutilation (FGM)?

As we informed to you last time, this time we have been working in area of Sidama with an ethnic group in Yirgalem Kale Hiywot Church for three days. Our teaching was about the significance of circumcision in Judaism and what the Bible says about FGM. We also looked at the ritual, metaphorical and ethical significance of circumcision. The amount of the listeners was women 40 and men more than 30 both in married and unmarried groups. From our teaching we will show some parts as the following…

1. Ritual significance  -Circumcision was the sign for a particular covenant between God and the family (Gen17:11) and it served as an instrument through which the covenant maintained from generation to generation (vv.10-12). It also was the means for assimilating to the covenant for those who were not related to Abraham biologically (vv12-13).

Though female circumcision is practiced among some people, the Old Testament (OT) emphasize the necessity for male only (Exodus 23: 17, 34:23, Duet 16:16). To take part in this covenant, circumcision is not needed for females. Additionally, God did not say that the covenant will continue only with the circumcised generation. Also females are not included in the legal code of circumcision (Lev 12:3).

2. Metaphorical Significance -In the five books of Moses and beyond, circumcision takes metaphorical connotations. The term is applied to other parts of the human anatomy in a symbolical way, such as heart (Lev 26:41) and lips (Ex 6:12). Uncircumcised heart is one that is incapable of understanding and fulfilling God’s requirements. Likewise, uncircumcised lips are unsuitable channels for divine communication. The metaphorical significance doesn’t mean FGM.

3. Ethical Significance- The ethical use of circumcision was in some way an extension of the metaphorical usage. But FGM is not God’s commandment like circumcision of man was God’s commandment in OT.

What the Bible says about it: - The Bible is silent about FGM. In OT we have brief explanation about male circumcision. The New Testament (NT) shows that we are free from the bondages of the law of circumcision. Circumcision is unnecessary even for male for his salvation and signification. We can’t afford spiritual quality by being circumcised. FGM is something which has developed in human history but not from the Biblical point of view. All the reasons that are given for the continuation of FGM have no biblical and theological basis.

The Response of Learners

After our teaching people said that this kind of teaching is very important to increase awareness about the harmful traditional practice of FGM. People again said that they want to have this kind of training continuously. They said: "It is very important to save the life of women from accidental death that might happen when they give birth with a circumcised body." As we understood from their response the people of Sidama are very interested to learn from the initial point, they want to understand why, where and when this practice really started in Ethiopia? So we are going to givethem another appointment and start with the background of FGM.

Terveisiä jälleen Bezuneshilta! Hän on kirjoitellut lyhyitä viestejä ahkeraan, mutta itse olen päässyt vasta nyt kirjoittamaan näistä. Jotenkin olen aavistanut tämän jo jonkin aikaa :) Mutta annetaan hänen kertoa itse:

"Hi, dear how are you? We are very fine with our great full work and lovely family. I would to like thank you for what you informed about receiving our work report and about our salary. Also dear I need special prayer from you concerning myself, because I am pregenant and the labour time time is nearing, in June at the end. Now we are on the teaching in Yirgalem church as we informed last time. We also prepare for visiting Bale Kokosa area next week. Also we will going to celebrate the 2nd year birthday of Abenezer our son."

Itse, 3-vuotiaan tytön äitinä täytyy kyllä tehdä hatunnosto Bezuneshille, että on jaksanut tehdä tätä työtään pienen pojan ja kasvavan mahan kanssa. Ympärileikatuille naisille synnyttäminen on erittäin vaarallista. Jos Bezuneshin tarina on sinulle tuttu, tiedät, että hän oli vakavassa hengenvaarassa esikoispoikansa synnytyksessä. Tällä kertaa hän varmaankin turvautuu keisarinleikkaukseen, mutta silti häntä jännittää synnytys kovasti. Ehkä voisimmekin, kuka meistä siihen tarvetta tuntee, käydä hänen FB-sivuillaan lähettämässä onnitteluviestin 2-vuotiaalle pojalleen sekä toivottamassa hänelle voimia synnytykseen?

Erityisesti tässä tilanteessa on hieno juttu, että Tesfaye on projektissa mukana myös. Ehkäpä raskaus ja pian koittava synnytys on saanut Bezuneshin suhtautumaan opetustyöhönsä entistä innokkaammin ja tarmokkaammin ja on hienoa, että hän saa mieheltän siihen tukea. Tänään sain heiltä tällaisen viestin:

"Hi dear, are you fine? We are very fine with our great work. We finished our teaching in Sidam ethnic group both female and male group and we will send the report next week concerning what we were teaching in Yirgalem among in Sidama ethnic group. Please send our greetings to all of those who support us in this project!"

Taloustilanteesta: lahjoituksia, pienempiä ja suurempia tipahtelee tuon tuosta, suurenmoinen kiitos niistä! Yritetään saada kokoon summa, joka kattaisi sekä Bezuneshin että Tesfayen palkat ja ainakin itse toivoisin, että voisimme lähettää heille myös pienen "äitiysavustuksen" samalla. Rahaliikenne Etiopiaan on yllättävän kallista, yksi tilisiirto maksaa 25-30 euroa, joten siksi yritän lähettää mahdollisimman paljon yhdellä kertaa. Bezuneshin kk-palkka on 220e, jota olen em syistä maksanut 3kk:n erissä, 660e. Tesfayen palkkatoive oli 700e/3kk, mikä mielestäni sekin on erittäin kohtuullinen. Tavoitteenani on maksaa heille seuraavan kerran 1400euroa, josta 40e olisi äitiysavustusta, tai enemmän jos onnistuu. Bezunesh ja Tesfaye suhtautuvat meidän rahankeräykseen hyvällä tavalla: he tekevät mielellään työtään, sydämestä ja omasta sisäisestä palosta. Jos pystymme maksamaan täyttä palkkaa, ovat he hyvin kiitollisia. Jos taas jonain kertana emme, ovat he silti hyvin kiitollisia pienemmästäkin summasta. Tällä hetkellä tilillä on n 600e, mutta palkkapäivä on vasta heinäkuussa, joten hyvältä näyttää. Tilinro on FI17 5549 8340 0167 24 (Henrica Fagerlund-Sippoin) ja kaikki, pienet kuin isommatkin summat otetaan kiitollisuudella vastaan!

Jälleen menestyksekäs raportti!

Work report to our partners in Finland

This time me and my husband Tesfaye Alemu taught ethnic groups both in Kambata and Sidama in Yigalem and in Zama Congregation for groups of both women and men. The number of women was more than 70 and men was more than 50. This shows the interest of people to learn and understand about the harmful traditional practice.

This time we stayed in Kambata area for 4 days and we came back to our home on the fifth day. From there we continued in Yirgalem (our home town) for 2 days. The response of people is very positive. They said that after your teaching we will stand together to stop the harmful traditional practice of FGM (female genital mutilation). We lost many women when theygave birth through with this dangerous circumcised body. We are sorry for them. Now, we understand the harmfulness of FGM, so we will stand strongly to stop this practice.

Our teaching focused on the theological reasons against the harmful traditional practice of FGM. We taught deeply based on this topic with biblical support by showing some texts and theological arguments.

      A sample from our teaching -

Theologically, man is God's steward on the overall creation of the earth. According to the Luther explanation, the confession of God as creator implies that the same God that created me, my body and my soul, upholds me with his power. As christians we should respect the gift of God since God has entrusted us with his gifts. FGM is hurting the body of human being. Christians should stand against this harmful practice as God's stewards for their bodies and all creation. FGM is not God's commandment like circumcision of male was commandment in OT. For this time we taught is like this.

Information - We aim to continue after Ethiopian Ester fast on these topics. After the fast we will go to Oromo Region Bale Kokosa village addressing male groups to make them aware of the harmful traditional practice of FGM on the lives of women and we will also teach both circumcised and uncircumcised girls and married women. The distance of Bale Kokosa is far from Yirgalem, about 150 kms. So please support us within your thoughts for this journey. We wish all the best to our readers in Finland!
