WANTED: Kibo motorbikes for our team!

In this picture you see me together with two awesome ladies from Nairobi and a Kibo bike. What do this have to do with our anti-FGM work? I promise: A lot and you're gonna be as inspired as I!

But let me first tell about traveling with Elizabeth. Quite often her team is walking from village to another, but by walk they can't reach to the most far away villages. When they have some money they will travel by matatu, which is a kind of oldfashion minibus. But the roads are not like our roads. Actually our opinions about the "roads" would be that they are absolutely undrivable. But there they drive and its very bumpy and slow. There is also no timetables. The matatu leaves when it leaves and drives at the possible speed. But sometimes, especially during rain season the matatus cannot drive at all. That means sometimes or most of the time its not possible to be on time on appointments. That's the famous "African time" and it means you can never know what will happen at what time.

The problem is that if our team has invited people to a gathering, they can try their best to attend, but they can never be sure if they trust the matatu. So that's why, if they have money they hire motorbikes and drivers. With the bikes they can go anywhere at anytime, the only thing is its so expensive because their travels can take many days and they have to pay for the drivers.

So now you might get the same idea I got in that bumpy matatu: This team needs their own motorbikes so they can go where ever they need to and at the schedule that's best  for them!

I told my idea for the team and agreed on the fullest! So I started to think.... 

...and I got a clue... 

But I didn't really know what I was doing until...

Few days later after visiting Elizabeth I went back to Nairobi for participating in Nairobi Symphony Orchestra. I had planned a meeting with one interesting artist I got to know trough facebook. On my way to meet her I remembered I've seen pics of her on a motorbike on fb so I decided to ask her about motorbike stuffs. We had discussed for maybe half an hour when one of her friends turned up, fully dressed in motorbike clothes. So we continued to talk bike stuffs and this other woman was happy to tell she just won a motorbike race (okay she was the only one in female series but anyway!) and therefore was hired by Kibo, which is a new Kenyan motorbike manufacturer.

So very soon we got the same idea you might be thinking of: Let's ask Kibo to be one sponsor for the bikes to our team! Our idea for other sponsors was to ask both Kenyan and Finnish ladybikers clubs, we think they might be really interested. Because hey, a maasai womens team fighting against FGM and promote girls rights and gender equality on motorbikes? How cool would that look!!! :D

So that's why we're standing in front of that Kibo bike on the picture.

But the good flow doesn't stop here... We will have some really nice oppurtinities with Finnish media. And that's one thing how we will get Kibo interested to join this project! More about those exciting Opportunities later because I don't know how secret those things are... ;) But I'm sure you gonna be as excited as I!!!

RIP Ester Naisianoi who changed the whole village

These maasai men start to realize: What are we doing to our girls??!!

As you might remember I told on Facebook about Elizabeths friend Esther, a 13-yrs young girl who died while giving birth. This is what I posted by then:

We got sad news today. Elizabeth's friend died. She was only 13 yrs old and she was giving birth to her first child. Her genitalia was mutilated when she was 9yrs and soon after she was forced to be wife for an old man. When she gave birth her body bursted because the baby couldn't get out trough her mutilated vagina. That caused her death :( In maasai community when a girl dies of the consequences of FGM she becomes taboo. Nobody even recognizes she ever lived after she is buried. But Elizabeth will not keep quiet about this issue! She already agreed to attend the funeral and make a speech that will make nobody forget this little girl! Its not without reason so many maasai girls run away. And it's not without reason we celebrate women's day today. We need to change the world and save our girls! RIP Esther Naisianoi, you little maasai girl who suffered because of so many bad practices <3

Today, as we celebrate Good Friday in rememberance of the death of Jesus Christ, we also are remembering the death of Kijolus Esther Sankale Naisianoi. Elizabeth attended the funeral in Esthers home village Sakutiek and she was invited to speak. 

Normally if a girl dies of consequenses of FGM, people will not realize what was the real reason of her death. Talking about FGM is a very serious taboo so nobody will mention anything about that and people will therefore think she just died of a random reason. But Elizabeth attended the funeral and explained all details about FGM and child marriage and how it effects the girl. The whole village was very shocked to learn about the reason that caused Esthers death. Even Esthers husband was listening. This is how Elizabeth describes his reaction:

"Yes her husband was there and he was so painful blaming himself of marrying a too young circumsiced girl."

We can't blame him. He didn't know any better. But now he does and so does all the other villagers.

"We will not repeat this mistake!"

 All people who attended understood the horrible truth and they decided to stop FGM. Even the men realized how horrible the practice of FGM is. Many times men have no idea what happens during FGM and how it effects girls and women the rest of their lives, because the life of maasai men and maasai women are so separated. Men might think FGM is similar to male circumcision and that it doesn't effect the lifes of women so much afterwards. Or they just don't think about it at all. And we can't blame them, because they really don't know what it is about. That's why we need to educate those societys!

Elizabeths team needs also our support. Sakutiek is far away from Elizas home village Wafoo and this time traveled by walk because she is out of money. She have to bring the runaway girls home from the boarding school soon when the vacation starts and she doesn't even have money for that. I will send her all we have, but also Bezunesh is waiting for her salary. Olen harmillisen tietoinen siitä, kuinka pahasti jälkijunassa tämä blogi raahaa. Ollaan siis tehty vaikka kuinka paljon kaikkea ja suunnitteilla on myös vaikka kuinka paljon kaikkea, mutta en vain ole ehtinyt kirjoittaa.

Key persons committed to spread anti-FGM teaching in Ethiopia

Serious key leaders listening to Bezunesh's feministic teaching against FGM.

Bezunesh and Tesfaye have been teaching in a Bible school in Funto, Ethiopia. In Ethiopia religious leaders and church workers are highly respected and opinion makers. But they don't teach about dangers of FGM or gender equality related issues because these are very strong taboos. Key persons are most often only male and they have no idea about "womens stuffs".

When listening to Bezunesh's teaching it's for many the first time ever they hear anyone talking about these issues. When they hear the teaching they understand so much better and realize they are the key persons to spread this kind of teaching. Our amazing Bezunesh engaged all these leaders to start teaching against FGM and to promote gender equality in their societys!

The teaching of this time is really strong. When reading Bezunesh's report I can hear a powerful feministic outcry and with a voice of a true change maker. The best part is that she is fully supported by her husband Tesfaye. His support gives her teaching the credibility and reliability that women still can't achieve in that society. This is what Bezunesh is writing in her report of this teaching time:

The third work report to our partners those who live in Finland

Challenges of women in Kambata people: Dehumanization, Socio-economic oppression, the workload of women, women in Education and Female Genital Mutilation.

We taught in Funto Bible school for 2 days. Our learners came from more than 32 different churches and denominations and they are very key persons in their congregations. There were leaders of congregations, leaders of youth groups, coordinators of women in the church and teachers of Sunday schools. The learner’s interest was very active and they were very teachable. Totally we had 64 learners, both male and female and both married and unmarried. Our teaching consisted of following subtopics:

Dehumanization

Some cultural practices of Ethiopia are known to suppress the human quality of woman. There are many proverbs that dehumanize women. For example: 

"Women do not know beyond preparing food or beyond kitchen"

"Beating with stick is medicine for women and donkey"

"Friendless be friends with women"

"Being a father to girls and being drowned by water are the same"

These proverbs create a high psychological impact on women in the society. It makes women accept their weakness as something natural and unchangeable and forces women put themselves in the lowest category.

Socio-Economic Oppression

In many Ethiopian rural societies women are disadvantaged in many ways. The majority of women do not benefit from social, economical and political activities of the society because of their low status. Power status and decision making are two main reasons inhibiting women from enjoying a better social status.

For example in the agriculture sector the participation of women is remarkable in all activities. Despite this fact, locations of the products are mainly the domain of men. In the society, women have almost no right in managing the income generated from marketing the product. Customarily, in most areas, women are not entitled to own land even though they are accorded with equal right to ownership by the civil code. 

Gender inequality is also reflected when one examines the current educational enrollment rate, access to health institutions, employment situation, etc. All of these indicate the fact that women are marginalized and oppressed.

The Workload of Women

Women have much more responsibility to work in household than men. For example women are expected to take the responsibility for all food processing, other domestic activities, budgeting the household resources, constantly furnishing the society with labor, protecting children from any sort of danger, care for them whenever they get ill, caring for the sick and older family members. 

When we observe women in the domestic role, they are responsible for society. There are other responsibilities for women which are mentioned as a workload, like fetching water from river, collecting wood, washing cloths and so on. They are overburdened by too much work during pregnancy and expected to work even they are sick. Men do not share such responsibilities. 

Even though women play a great role in the society their contributions are unrecognized in society and in household. In these ways women are mistreated in the church and in society.

Women in Education

Women have limited access to education. In Ethiopian society many people believe that educating women is waste of time and money. The reason for this is that women are considered as someone’s property belonging to one man. They are not regarded as tomorrow’s leaders and decision makers. There are a lot of things that hinder women to benefit frm education. Many wish to see their daughters get a good marriage rather than education. Most parents or the society realize that completing the primary education is enough for the girls. The girls are also forced to see the suppressive situation of their eldest sisters and mothers. Even if there is some change regarding to women in education in present days, the attitude of uneducated people is unchanged about women education until this day.

Female Genital Mutilation

FGM is a common and acceptable norm in the Ethiopian culture. Many women are suffering from serious health problems as a consequence of this practice. FGM puts extra strain on the women that are already burdened.

FGM is causing both immediate and long-term health complication that affect women’s physical and mental being. As it has been mentioned, FGM has short and long term effect in women’s lives such as severe bleeding due to extreme pain that takes a long time to be healed.

According to Ethiopian culture, many people believe that female circumcision is a form of initiation into womanhood or to ensure social cohesion and family integration. They do this practice to reduce females’ sexual desire as a means of maintaining chastity, virginity, and fidelity and as a way of increasing male’s sexual pleasure. Now days, although this tradition is publically discouraged, some people are continuing this practice in secret because it is a culturally acceptable norm. Even if there is teaching to avoid the practice of FGM from the Ethiopian people, it is not effectively implemented. Therefore FGM has been the one of sever challenges and ways to oppress women in Ethiopian society as well as in the church until this day.

Bezunesh and Tesfaye is doing a great work and a big change, but the reality is still that the need of this kind of teaching is really huge! There is so many unreached societys in rural Ethiopia. Bezunesh and Tesfaye gets their salary from us, me and you, trough my small NGO "Bezuneshin ystävät ry". It is expensive to travel to rural areas and they can't work without our support. Paenneiden tyttöjen uutisia

Hyviä uutisia kaikille kummitytön kummeille ja muillekin! Tänään Keniassa alkoivat koulut joululoman jälkeen ja kaikki meidän paenneet tytöt ovat päässeet kouluun. Suuri kiitos sinulle kummi!!!

Sitten haasteet: Iso osa koululaisista käyvät sisäoppilaitosta, koska koulumatkat ovat liian pitkiä. Joululomaksi oppilaat menevät kotikyliinsä. Joulunvietto ei olekaan monelle tytöille mikään iloinen juhla, sillä tyttöjen palatessa kotikyliinsä on monella edessä ympärileikkaus ja pakkoavioliitto, sillä kun tyttö on ympärileikattu katsotaan hänen olevan valmista tavaraa vaimomarkkinoilla kahden viikon päästä ympärileikkauksesta. Ja puhumme nyt ala-asteikäisistä tytöistä! Meidän paenneet tytöt ovat viettäneet joulunsa Elizabethin ja muiden tiimiläisten kodeissa, joten heillä on kaikki hyvin. 

Moni koulutyttö tiesi mitä kotikylässä odottaa ja päättivät siksi paeta kotiinpaluun sijaan. Koulujen opettajatkin tietävät auttaa tyttöjä pakenemisessa. Kahdeksan paennutta tyttöä löysivät joululoman aikana Elizabethin ovelle, ja hän tottakai otti tytöt vastaan. Mitäpä muutakaan voisi tehdä? Elizabeth on itse aikoinaan paennut ja osaa todella samaistua tyttöjen avunhuutoon. Mutta yhteensä 18 tyttöä on tosi paljon majoittaa pikkuruisiin afrikkalaisiin kopperotaloihin.

Paenneilla tytöillä ei ole mitään tukiverkkoa. Monet hakeutuvat eri kirkkojen ja pastorien luokse, mutta tiimimme toiminta-alueella Narokissa kirkkojen turvakodit ovat ääriään myöten täynnä. On hieno juttu, että löytyy tiimiläistemme kaltaisia ihmisiä, jotka voivat ottaa tytöt huostaansa. Ja on aina hieno juttu, jos tyttö päätyy turvalliseen huostaan. Paenneesta tytöstä huolehtiminen on kuitenkin todellinen turvallisuusriski: paenneen tytön isä ja muut kylänmiehet lähtevät etsimään tyttöä tappaakseen hänet. Elizabethilla oli suuria haasteita piilotella tyttöjä pienessä vaatimattomassa peltitalossaan. Onneksi tytöt ovat nyt koulussa. Koulun porteilla on vartijat ja sotavarusteisiin pukeutuneita vihaisia miehiä ei päästetä sisään.

Vuoden 2016 tavoite

TURVAKOTI 

Elizabethin tiimillä on unelma rakentaa uusi turvakoti. Paenneita tyttöjä tulee kokoajan enemmän ja enemmän. Tiimi on jo saanut maapläntin lahjoituksena Ipartimaron kylästä ja tähän olisi tarkoitus rakentaa turvakoti ja koulu johon mahtuu 400 tyttöä. Heidän kustannuslaskelma on 200,000 euroa. Se ei periaatteessa ole kovin suuri summa, mutta meidän pikkuyhdistykselle mahdoton. Voisiko tuollaisen summan saada kasaan kyselemällä eri sponsoreilta ja rahastoilta pienempiä summia? Mitä ideoita sinulla on? Rakennusprojektia lähtisi valvomaan muutama vapaaehtoinen Suomesta, sillä tuollapäin rahoja tuppaa katoilemaan sinne sun tänne ellei niitä pidä silmällä.

KOULUTYTÖT

Uusia tyttöjä siis on, ja edellisilläkään ei kaikilla ole kummeja. Jaamme kuitenkin rahat tasan, sillä haluamme kohdella heitä kaikkia tasavertaisesti. Tällöin rahat saattavat loppua ennen aikojaan ja Elizabeth ja tiimiläiset maksavat loput omasta palkastaan. Jos sinulla on joku ystävä jota kiinnostaisi kummitytön ottaminen, vinkkaathan! Ehkä paras puoli tällaisessa ruohojuuritason toiminnassa on se, että rahaa ei mene organisaation pyörittämiseen, vaan kaikki varat suoraan oikeaan tarkoitukseen. Se on meidän valttimme tässä eri hyväntekeväisyysjärjestöjen kilpailussa tukijoista. 

Nämä tytöt eivät pystyneet ottamaan juuri mitään mukaansa, heiltä puuttuu oikeastaan kaikki. Olen lähdössä tapaamaan heitä ensi maaliskuussa ja ajattelin pystyttää keräyksen heille. Siitä lisää postauksen lopussa. Sitä ennen Elizabethin lähettämiä kuvia ja tietoja uusista tytöistä:

Juliana Sanaipei is 10yrs old from Saleita primary school. We went to teach to that school and she came to me through their teacher who contacted me to tell she is in danger. The teacher also helped her to escape and to come me.

Maria Ntilio is 11yrs old from Entingi village. She came to me through pastor Oloshipa Mparu, who invited us once to teach in his church. The pastor found Maria and she stayed in his house for one week and then he brought her to me.

Veronica Tipina is 12yrs old from Oloonkipejus village. She came to me by herself. She heard about me through other girls who attended our teaching. It took her two days to reach to me!

Winnyfriend Naikuso is 12yrs old from Sakutiek village. One woman in her neighbour was attending our teaching and was therefore able to help her to run away because she could see that she is in danger.

Jackline Mantaine is 14yrs old from Ilaiser village. She heard about our teachings in her school and also one of our run away girl is her friend from the same village.

Jackline Rempesa is 15yrs old from Sankale village. She is the oldest among the new girls and she was passing through great challenges before arriving to me. She was brouht to me by the same pastor Oloshipa Mparu because she is from his church branch.

Branice Ratia is 14yrs old from Ildamat village. She is from Saleita primary school one of the school where we went to teach. She understood our teaching and what is happening to her so she ran away and came to me by herself.

Linah Naipanoi is 9yrs from Wafoo village. She ran away and a church elder from Full Gospel Church of Kenya found her and took her to me.

Tiimimme tekee tärkeää työtä, jotta tulevaisuudessa yhä harvempi tyttö joutuisi pakenemaan. Uuden tavan omaksuminen vie kuitenkin aikaa, ja sillä välin tulee paljon tyttöjä. Voitko ottaa yhden kummilapseksesi? Tai onko sinulla ideoita kuinka rahoittaa turvakoti?

KOULUTYTTÖJEN TARVIKEKERÄYS

Tytöt tarvitsevat ulkokenkiä, vaatteita, huopia, pesuvälineitä ja kirjoitusvälineitä. Ehkä sinulta löytyy lahjoitettavaa? Narokissa on välillä todella rankkoja sadekausia, joten sadevaatteet ja kumisaappaat tulevat tarpeeseen. Pitkähihaiset paidat ja pitkät hameet/mekot ovat yleisimmät tyttöjen käyttämät vaatteet. Myös alushousuja, sukkia, toppeja jne tarvitaan. Pesuvälineistä saippuat ja pyyhkeet ovat parhaat. He tarvitsevat myös kuukautissuojia, mutta sidepaketit loppuvat äkkiä ja tuottavat vain roskia, taas kuukuppeja ei vessoissa voi pestä kun niissä ei ole vettä. Niinpä mietin kestositeitä, siis sellaisia pestäviä. Tiedätkö ketään, joka osaisi valmistaa sellaisia tai mistä niitä voisi saada edullisesti tai jopa sponsoroituna?

Anti-FGM – Huikean menestyksekäs vuosi 2015

Uusi vuosi lähestyy ja haluan kiittää ihan jokaista, sillä vuosi 2015 on ollut aivan uskomattoman hienoa aikaa! Myönnän suoraan, että ensimmäinen matkani Afrikkaan oli todellinen Life Changer. Sain oppia ja ymmärtää niin käsittämättömän paljon asioita, että en vieläkään oikein pysty kaikkea hahmottamaan. Tärkeimmät oivallukseni olivat:

-Pienilläkin teoilla voi saada suurta muutosta aikaan jos todellista halua siihen on.

-Meillä on Suomessa asiat aivan uskomattoman hyvin ja meillä on maailman paras yhteiskuntajärjestelmä ja hallitus. (Suorastaan hävettää se jatkuva valitus mitä täältä kuuluu! Haluaisin lähettää jokaisen suomalaisen valittajan kuukaudeksi afrikkalaiseen slummiin oppiman!)

-Me ihmiset olemme pohjimmiltamme aivan samanlaisia kaikkialla.

-Sisukkuudella, organisointikyvyllä ja hyvällä asenteella pääsee pitkälle vaikka rahaa ei olisikaan.

Elizabethin kotikylässä, kenialaisessa maasaikylä Wafoossa, sain lämpimän vastaanoton kesäkuussa 2015.

Työntekijöidemme tapaaminen ja työnsä seuraaminen livenä oli minulle todella vahva näyttö yhdistyksemme toiminnan vaikuttavuudesta. Me olemme muuttaneet todella monen afrikkalaisen tytön ja naisen elämää, jopa kokonaisia perheitä ja yhteisöjä! On hiukeaa ajatella, että pienikin summa suomalaista rahaa voi saada niin paljon hyvää aikaiseksi kun sen kohdistaa oikein! Eikä raha ole tässä se ratkaisevin juttu, kuten juuri totesin. Sisukkuus, organisointikyky ja hyvä asenne vie vielä pidemmälle.

Kun harmittelen Bezuneshille ja Tesfayelle etten taaskaan saanut kokoon niin paljon rahaa kuin he olisivat ansainnee, vastaavat he joka kerta: "Ei se haittaa, olemme kiitollisia kaikesta pienestäkin mitä pystytte antamaan. Me teemme tätä työtä työn tärkeyden takia, emme rahan takia." Heillä on silti perhe huolehdittavanaan (kaksi omaa lasta ja kaksi sukulaistyttöä) ja lisäksi opetusmatkoista tulee heille suuria kustannuksia. Heidän täysi kuukausipalkkansa on 250e kummallekin, vaikka käytännössä jää usein 200e hujakoille.

Vielä koskettavampi on Elizabethin tiimin asenne. Kun pahoittelen heille varojen niukkuutta sanovat he: "Jos pystyt lähettämään rahaa meille, voimme matkustaa kauempiin kyliin. Mutta älä huoli, jos rahaa ei ole, menemme kävellen lähempiin kyliin. Ja tyttöjen koulumaksut ovat tärkeämmät kuin meidän palkka." Heidän tiimihenkensä on myös aivan mahtava. Kävellessään pitkiä matkoja paikasta toiseen he pitävät yllä hyvää spirittiä hauskoilla tyttöjen jutuilla ja he myös kantavat ja hoitavat Monican 1-vuotiasta poikaa vuorotellen. Majatalossa he nukkuvat kaikki samassa huoneessa ja samassa sängyssä.

Palaverissa Full Gospel Church of  Kenyan johtajien kanssa. He tekevät vastaavanlaista työtä kuin meidän tiimimme, mutta eri alueella. Heidän pääpomonsa Sammy Mutesya (kuvassa vasemmalla puolellani selittämässä) oli erittäin iloinen kuullessaan tiimistämme: "Its great work they do because they operate on an unreached area"

Rachael, Elizabeth, Monica Romeon kanssa ja George, Wafoon kylän pastori sekä Elizabethin vahva henkinen tuki.

Elizabethin pyyteettömyys on myös jotakin todella ihaltavaa. Tiedän sen, koska olen sen itse nähnyt: mitä enemmän pystyn heille antamaan rahaa, sitä enemmän hyvää he pystyvät sillä tekemään. Kaikki rahat menevät työn edistämiseen ja paenneista tytöistä huolehtimiseen (koulumaksut, vaatteet, ruoka, terveyden-ja sairaanhoitokulut). Ulospäin Elizabeth vaikuttaa hiukan ujolta ja varovaiselta, mutta vaikka hän on tiimin kuopus, on hänellä mieletön johtajan ja aikaansaajan asenne. Sisukkuus ei ole mikään suomalaisten yksin omistama juttu! :)

Pyrin maksamaan jokaiselle Elizabethin tiimiläiselle (heitä on siis neljä: Elizabeth, Rachael, Monica ja Ann) 200e/kk, mikä on kenialaisessakin mittakaavassa vaatimaton summa. Esimerkiksi kuvateksitssä mainitut samanlaista työtä tekevät kirkon työntekijät saavat 350e/kk ja sen päälle matka- ja majoitukskorvaukset. Harmikseni en pysty aina maksamaan tiimille edes tuota 200e palkkaa kulukorvauksista puhumattakaan. Kuitenkin olemme onnistuneet pitämään paenneet tytöt koulussa suomalaisten kummien avulla, ja se on erittäin hieno juttu!

Elizabethin tiimillä on kuitenkin suuria haasteita paenneiden tyttöjen kanssa. Kerron näistä lisää ensi postauksessa. Tässä vaiheessa sen verran, että suuren suuri kiitos jokaiselle joka on halunnut ottaa paenneen tytön kummiksi, teidän ansiosta tytöt pääsevät joululoman jälkeen takaisin kouluun 4. tammikuuta! Mutta tämä on sen verran laaja aihe, että tarvitsee oman postauksen, palaan asiaan :)

Successful anti-FGM work gives security challenges

We have greetings from Elizabeth also. Our Kenyan team is facing some security related challenges, but let's have the nice news first :) I'm always happy to read that our team are cooperating with local councelors and church elders. These respected men are not able to teach against FGM and child marriage themselves, because they don't have enough knowledge about the topic, but the support of these men is very powerful in making people listen to our team!

Terveisiä Elizabethilta. Kenian tiimillämme on paljon haasteita edessään mm. turvallisuuteen liittyen, mutta katsotaan kuitenkin iloiset uutiset ensin :) On aina hienoa lukea, että tiimimme tekee yhteistyötä paikallisten vaikutusvaltaisten miesten kanssa. Nämä miehet eivät itse tiedä aiheista riittävästi voidakseen itse opettaa kyläläisiä, mutta heidän tukensa tiimimme opetukselle antaa sanomalle hyvin vahvaa uskottavuutta!

Dear how are you? We are doing good, but now it's raining too heavy for us to travel. But we have been going to work to Olengomeii village. We called for a meeting together with the councellor of that area and also we went to one church in that same place. Around 100 people listened us that day and they were very happy and interested about our subjects against FGM and against child marriage and wanted to change.

When the rain gets easier we are planning to go Olesito village. We have been there before and after our teaching they wanted to change their practice so now they want more teaching from us. We are welcome by the priest of the church in Olesito.

We doing good but we are also facing a great challenge. You know, this is the holiday season when many girls are being circumsised so many girls has been escaping running away. So on top of those ten girls that I had here before Monica has some new runaways and also I have five new in my home.

It is great challenge to have these runaway girls with us because of security. Their fathers are so harsh and trying to find the girls because the girls are sold as brides. I am hiding some the girls. I spoke with Sammy [keeper of one rescue centre in neighbouring place] but he said he has no vacancy for girls in his place but luckily there is some church elders who are helping us.

Elizabeth and her team have a dream of building a rescue centre for these runaway girls. That centre would be a home and school for runaway girls and also it would be guarded for security of the girls. They already got a piece of land as donation from Ipartimaro village, where all villagers are suporting their work. The team has been asking us for support but the proposal its around 200,000 euros and I just don't happen to have such amount. Please take few minutes to think about possible funders, some organizations or goodwill clubs? I've already asked Rotary Club and Zonta Club but it seems that this kind of activity is not what they can fund. Please give me hints of where to ask: henrica.fagerlund(A)gmail.com

Suomeksi vielä. Elizabethin tiimillä on unelma rakentaa turvakoti näille tytöille. Turvakodissa olisi myös koulu sekä vartijat turvaamassa tyttöjen arkea. Tiimi on jo saanut palan maata rakennukselle lahjoituksena Ipartimaron kylässä, jossa asukkaat tukevat tiimin työtä vahvasti. He ovat kysyneet meiltä apua turvakodin rakentamiseen, mutta kustannuslaskelman perusteella on kyse n 200,000 eurosa eikä minulla satu sellaisia summia olemaan. Pystytkö antamaan muutaman minuutin ja mieti jotakin tahoja joilta voisi hakea rahoitusta tällaiselle hankkeelle?
